Ponies close to picking up commitment

Rowlett, Texas, on the east side of the Metroplex has produced plenty of Division I prospects over the years and this year’s best offering is 6-foot-2, 277-pound offensive guard Josh Hickman.
Hickman, an all-district pick as a junior, camped this summer at Texas, SMU and TCU. He came back from the camps with an offer from SMU and is close to landing an offer from the Horned Frogs. But he’s also close to ending the recruiting process.

“I like SMU a whole lot,” he said. “I’m thinking about committing. I really like coach Burns and coach Bennett. Coach Bennett was running around, so I didn’t get to talk to him too much. But he’s a nice guy. I know he’s going to turn that program around.”
While playing offensive guard does not rack up too many offensive statistics, Hickman’s team does track blocking numbers for its offensive linemen. During the 2003 season, he recorded 30 pancake blocks and did not allow any quarterback sacks.
He also was cornerstone along the line for a ground attack that averaged five yards per carry. Those numbers earned him offensive MVP honors for his high school team.
