Junior to Watch: Kefton Cheathem
School: Pomona, Calif.
Position: Wide receiver, safety and corner.
Size and Speed: Cheathem stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 195 pounds. He runs the 40 in 4.5.
Honors: Cheathem was selected all-league; all-area and all-county after an outstanding junior season that saw him stand out on both sides of the ball.
Statistics: On offense as a wide receiver Cheathem had 37 receptions for 597 yards, averaging 16.1 yards per catch and scored eight touchdowns. On defense playing primarily safety, Cheathem amassed 59 tackles and picked off three passes. He can also help a team as a kick returner, he returned two for touchdowns.
Favorite Colleges: Michigan, UCLA, USC, Cal, Oregon State and ASU are giving Cheathem a lot of early recruiting attention.
Skinny: Cheathem is one of those players who we will be hearing a lot about before the upcoming season is over. He is a tremendous all-around athlete. Not only is Cheathem an outstanding football player, but this fine all-around athlete also partakes in track. He participates in the long jump, high jump and triple jump.
Cheathem has the talent to be an impact player on either side of the ball on the collegiate level. He has a tremendous frame that can add another 15-to-20 pounds without skipping a beat.
“Kefton could grow and end up your prototypical NFC safety,” Pomona defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator John Brown said. “Like Eugene (Germany), Kefton passes the eyeball and the athletic test.”
“Pomona athletes aren’t chiseled like at some schools,” Brown said. “Once Kefton gets in a college weight room program the sky will be the limit for him.”
“Kefton is another player who isn’t tapped out yet,” Brown said. “He still has room to grow physically and as a football player.”
“Kefton may even grow into a will backer,” Brown said. “He’s a tremendous hitter.”
“As a receiver, Kefton has great hands,” Brown said. “And he has great instincts as a safety.”
