Pac-12 spotlight: Five teams that had a productive June

All across the country it has been an incredibly hectic month of commitments and that is also the case in the Pac-12. Here is a look at five teams that have been particularly productive on the recruiting trail during June.

ARIZONA STATE

Commitments: RB Demetrious Flowers, LB Christian LaValle, LB Reggie Hughes, RB Brock Sturges, DB Ely Doyle

Overview: The Sun Devils have landed five of their six pledges in June and they’ve done a particularly solid job recruiting the state of California. Hughes is the lone four-star in the class and he’s a talented linebacker who can make plays all over the field. Flowers could have a breakout senior season as the headliner in the Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco backfield. LaValle is an under-the-radar guy who plays for a great program and could emerge this fall.

CAL

JT Shrout

Commitments: DT Atonio Mafi, WR Nikko Remigio, QB JT Shrout

Overview: After landing a big commitment from talented three-star tight end McCallan Castles in late May, the Golden Bears did a great job in June getting Mafi early in the month. He’s an intriguing prospect who tips the scales at about 340 pounds, so he could be a big force on the line for coach Justin Wilcox and his staff to reinforce Cal’s defense. Then the Golden Bears loaded up on offense getting Remigio – a one-on-one nightmare who does great in space – and Shrout, who hasn’t gotten the respect he deserves among West quarterbacks but is still super talented.

OREGON

Warren Thompson

Commitments: ATH Tre’Shaun Harrison, ATH M.J. Cunningham, WR Warren Thompson, OL Christopher Randazzo, ATH Braden Lenzy, DE Jonathan King

Overview: After a slow start in recruiting to the coach Willie Taggart era, the Ducks are doing tremendously well since April and really loaded up in June. Oregon flipped four-star speedster Braden Lenzy from Notre Dame, landed four-star Thompson out of Florida and that was a huge commitment and then this week got commitments from Harrison and Cunningham, two of the top prospects in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon now has the No. 1 class in the Pac-12 and a top eight class nationally. It’s been a job well done.

UCLA

Niti Liu

Commitments: OL Marco Brewer, OL Chris Bleich, OL Jason Dickson, DT Niti Liu

Overview: Jim Mora and his staff landed a bunch of incredibly talented players early in the spring, including the linchpin of the class – four-star QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson – and then used June to load up on the offensive and defensive line. None are four-stars, but Dickson is a JUCO transfer who should be ready to play right away. Others could be projects, but definitely have the ability to contribute in the Pac-12. Liu is an interesting prospect who’s already over 300 pounds and could be a run-stuffer for UCLA in the coming years.

USC

Mychale Salahuddin

Commitments: WR Andre Hunt, RB Mychale Salahuddin, TE Camren McDonald, LB Kana’i Mauga, OL Justin Dedich, OL Liam Douglass

Overview: The Trojans had a busy – and productive – June. The Rose Bowl champions landed six commitments, all in the tail end of the month as the valuable Rising Stars camps continued. The group is headlined by Salahuddin, who worked out this past weekend and Dedich, who was incredibly impressive at the recent Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas. Douglass was a sleeper who showed out at camp and has excellent junior season film. Mauga was super good at a 7-on-7 in Las Vegas this offseason and could be the surprise of the group.
