Okwuegbunam still open

Springfield (Ill.) Sacred Heart Griffin three-star athlete Albert Okwuegbunam is up to 17 offers, with his most recent coming from Michigan State.
"They are definitely a strong interest of mine," Okweuegbunam said of Michigan State. "The success they've had academically and on the football field, that really puts them high in my mind."

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Okwuegbunam is listed as an athlete because he could project to several positions in college. Most schools project him as a tight end, but he ran a 4.54 40-yard dash for Michigan State and the Spartans are considering him for an outside receiver position.
The visit to Michigan State and the offer from the Spartans came in mid-June. That was the last visit the Central Illinois standout has taken, but he could see other schools before his senior season starts.
"I don't have any more visits scheduled yet, but I might get a chance to visit one or two more this summer," Okwuegbunam said. "I definitely want to take in some games this season. Most likely (a decision) is going to be during or after the season."
With a decision still a ways off, Okwuegbunam has not settled on his favorites yet. The programs he has the strongest relationship with at this stage of the process, though, are Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan State, Iowa State, Syracuse and Iowa.
"I have been to all of those schools except for Syracuse," Okwuegbunam said. "I want to go on a visit this summer, but I'm not 100 percent that is for sure going to happen."
Two of Okwuegbunam's most recent visits prior to Michigan State were to Iowa and Minnesota in April.
"At Minnesota I liked the opportunity after school in Minneapolis," Okwuegbunam said. "Then, their coaching staff is real genuine. With the rising program they have could be (competitive) every year.
"Iowa, just with the success their players have had at the next level. Then, the facilities and the new renovations I liked those."
Okwuegbunam is ranked as the No. 58 athlete prospect and the No. 15 overall prospect in the state of Illinois for the 2016 class.
