Oklahoma is one of the nation's premiere states for producing talent. However many national observers overlook the state because of the recruiting monster to the South in the Lone Star State. But college coaches know well that Oklahoma is a must-stop spot for solid talent each and every year.
While this season's Oklahoma preseason Top 40 might not have a truly elite five-star or Rivals100 recruit, the top five players in the state are all national recruits.
The top spot in the ranking is belongs to Tulsa Central four-star athlete DeMarco Cobbs. Cobbs, who is 6 feet 1, 198 pounds, is one of more heavily recruited athletes in the nation because of his versatility. He could project at a number of different positions, including receiver, safety or even outside linebacker.
The No. 2 and No. 3 spots are held by four-star defensive tackle Calvin Barnett and four-star offensive tackle Trent Spurgeon. Barnett from Tulsa Booker T. Washington lists Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Texas Tech and UCLA as his top teams, and Spurgeon from Owasso has narrowed it down to Arizona, Texas Tech and Tulsa.
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State check in with their top in-state gets at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the state.
The Sooners' top in-state get is Mustang four-star offensive guard Bronson Irwin, who committed back on March 12 to the Sooners over offers from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Irwin is the state's fourth-best prospect.
OSU's best commit is Sand Springs Charles Page four-star quarterback Johnny Deaton, the No. 5 player in the state. Deaton committed to the Cowboys back in February before recruiting could even get started.
OU also has commitments from linebacker Trayvon Henry at No. 10, cornerback Aaron Colvin at No. 8, athlete Julian Wilson at No. 18, and Jarrett Lake at No. 22.
Tulsa has also done a solid job early on in-state with commitments from three-star lineman Jake Alexander at No. 12, three-star cornerback Brenton Bogar at No. 26, three-star safety Dewitt Jennings at No. 31, two-star receiver Thomas Roberson at No. 33, two-star tight end Deonte Morris at No. 35.
