Bobby Okereke is taking academics seriously so when the Tustin (Calif.) Foothill recruit recently released his top six it was no surprise to see some of the schools on his list.
Northwestern, Cal, USC, Vanderbilt, Washington and Oregon comprise the favorites for Okereke, a tight end and linebacker who has seen his recruitment take off in recent weeks.
There's no question academics will play an important role in his decision-making process.
"That's probably the No. 1 thing," Okereke said.
The timing of Okereke's decision to trim his list is important. With 15 offers on the table, the Tustin Foothill standout wanted a better grasp on his recruitment heading into the summer.
The preference would be to take some official visits before making a decision but Okereke, in so many words, said some schools are pressuring him to make a decision earlier and that's why this summer could be so important.
"I just wanted to start narrowing it down as we get into the summer," Okereke said. "My school gets out on June 20 so I just wanted to go into the summer with at least a narrowed down list of schools I'm considering.
"I'd like to take some official visits but there is going to be some pressure for me to commit during the summer."
Soon after USC offered recently, there were rumors that the Trojans took a massive lead in his recruitment. That still might be true but Okereke is taking a serious look at all contenders before making any decisions.
There are some visits scheduled in the coming weeks and later this week Okereke is headed to Stanford, which has not offered yet but would jump into the equation if that happened.
"I'd say (USC is) at the upper portion of that list," Okereke said. "Academically, I would say my best bet right now is Northwestern but Vanderbilt is really high up there along with USC and Cal and then with Washington and Oregon I'm still looking at those schools, too.
"Washington was my first offer so I set up a camp thing, I'm going up there just to visit on June 28 I believe and then later this week on Thursday my dad and I are going up to Stanford for their camp. That's a very attractive school to me but we'll have to see if they offer first."
