Perhaps that toughness helped him land a scholarship offer from Illinois. Akron and Elon also offered, but Heis decided to head to Champaign and committed to the Fighting Illini.
Heis will have surgery in December, but is expected to be 100% healthy prior to the start of fall practice at Illinois.
"He visited Illinois in the summer and really liked it," Anderson coach Vince Suriano said. "He really liked the coaches. He wants to go into business and Illinois has one of the top business schools in the country."
The 6-foot-5 and 270 pound Heis was a varsity starter at guard his junior year. He played tackle this season. Heis is a versatile athlete who also has played basketball.
