September 5th will be a big day for five-star cornerback prospect Darius Winston. The West Helena (Ark.) Central product will kick off his senior season on that date with a big showdown against Arkansas power Pulaski Academy. In that game he will face his toughest test of the year in Kansas wide receiver commit Neal Barlow.
Beyond that season opener, Winston has some other big plans for that Friday. He anticipates making his college announcement that afternoon.
"[The announcement] is going to be on September 5th," Winston said. "I believe it's going to be between 1:00 and 2:00."
Before Winston makes that announcement, he has one more order of business to make sure his choice is the right one.
"I plan on taking an official visit down to Ole Miss," he said. "I haven't gotten a chance to see what the atmosphere is like on game day down there. It will be the first game, the last Saturday in August."
Among Winston's five finalists of Clemson, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Michigan and Tennessee, the Rebels are the only school, other than the in-state Razorbacks, that has seen Winston hit campus. Nonetheless, Winston want s to take a closer look at Oxford, Miss.
"I'm going to be looking forward and looking at mostly the defensive backs and how they play," he said. "And I'll look at the scene and what it's like to be an Ole Miss Rebel."
The game at Ole Miss will be the first college football game Winston has every attended. Winston has taken multiple trips to Arkansas but has only seen the Spring Game and has not taken in an actual fall Saturday.
Winston is rated as a five-star prospect and the No. 2 cornerback in the country in the most recent Rivals.com rankings.
