As 2020 quarterback talent in Texas continues to reveal itself, one player that has suddenly become a name to watch has been Houston up-and-comer, Malik Hornsby.

At the rate he’s going, it won’t be long before that description will be passé - after opening up his recruitment with an offer from SMU last week, he’s since followed that up with two more from Houston and Tennessee. A quick survey of his athletic potential might seem a no-brainer as to why he’s seen such a recent flurry, but his natural arm talent is nothing to sneer at, and he was among the more memorable passers at the Houston event of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas just weeks ago.

“It’s been good,” he said of his experience on the camp circuit this spring. “I have been exposed to more people, had a lot of fun experiences, and I’ve been learning stuff. I’ve had the chance to be around a lot of athletes in the game that have made me better.”

Hornsby is hoping to make it to as many campuses as he can this summer to throw for as many teams as possible to continue his momentum on the recruiting trail. He said teams like Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas Tech and Virginia Tech are all among the teams looking to see him in person and could be interested in adding their offers to his list.

IN HIS WORDS

On SMU

“I appreciate the offer,” he said. “I was kind of in shock when I got it. I didn’t know it was going to come that early in the spring. I’m glad I got it, I’m interested in them, but it just tells me that I have more to prove as a player … I’m glad someone from home was the first to offer, so they are always going to stay on my mind because of that.”

On Tennessee

“I was blessed to receive another one from them,” he said. “I just have to keep grinding, but I’m glad that they recognized my talent and what I can do on the field … They’re coming to see me next week and I watched a few Tennessee games last year. I wouldn’t mind being in the orange and white at all, but right now, I’m just happy to get an offer from them.”

RIVALS REACTION

Hornsby still has plenty of raw elements to his abilities as a passer, but his height and arm strength are easy to see and good building blocks when considering his future potential. If this past week-and-a-half is any indication, the offers could continue to come in bunches and as he continues to sharpen up some mechanical things, there is a lot more to look forward to with his recruitment.
