Odom piling up numbers

Maurice Odom emerged on the South Carolina football map with a big junior season at Cayce (S.C.) Brookland-Cacye High. As a junior, the running back finished with 1,246 yards and 15 touchdowns. Now, as a senior, he’s making sure that people realize last year was no fluke.
“We’re 7-2 while playing with a back-up quarterback, so we’re doing pretty good,” Odom said. “In two games I got shut down but I still have 1,108 yards and 14 touchdowns already, so I’m right on track overall. I’m definitely having a better year than last season.”

As his numbers have gone up, so has interest in his services.
“I’ve been talking to Georgia Southern, coach Hickson at Liberty, Akron and South Carolina State,” Odom said. “I really like Georgia Southern because of their winning tradition.”
While he has yet to set any dates, plans for official visits have been in the works for Odom.
“I’m planning on going to Georgia Southern, Liberty, the Citadel and South Carolina State, but I don’t have any dates yet,” he said. “My mom went to South Carolina State, so I want to give them a real look, too.”
With his 4.4-second 40-yard dash time, Odom likens his game to one of the greats from the recent past.
“I always liked Barry Sanders when I was growing up, and I think I play like him. I’m a shifty guy, but when it’s time to get hard yardage I’m willing to get my nose dirty.”
