Numbers Crunch: Summing up Weis at Kansas

Long-term contracts rule.
Nobody should feel too badly for Weis here. The dude probably won't cry himself to sleep on a bed made of cash tonight, but he certainly could if he wanted to.

Kansas' current class of 2015 recruiting ranking.
Shockingly, it's not last in the Big 12. Iowa State is holding that down at No. 81, and Kansas State ranks 73rd, although the Wildcats have a higher star rating per recruit.
The Jayhawks seem unlikely to tumble too much further in the rankings, though, as the recruits committed to the Jayhawks weren't fooled into thinking they were walking into a stable situation or some national powerhouse. They knew what they were getting. The Jayhawks may lose a prospect or two but a mass exodus is unlikely.

Total points scored by SMU in four games this season.
It's good to know that college football won't hurt for a team to laugh at in the absence of a Weis-led Kansas squad. The guy who steps up to take the Mustangs' job will be a brave soul.

Days between losses to Northwestern for Penn State, which fell to the Wildcats on Saturday.
James Franklin's recruiting can't be questioned, but he has yet to win conference games in bunches as a head coach.
Will one bad loss ruin the Penn State program or knock it off its recruiting pace? Not a chance. Penn State's brand will be fine and the recruiting success James Franklin is having won't crumble because of an upset in September.
What it may do, though, is help inch along the thought that Franklin is better at winning recruiting battles than conference football games. He was 11-13 in SEC games as the head coach at Vanderbilt and is now a shiny 1-1 in Big Ten contests at Penn State. The sample size is tiny and could mean nothing. If Penn State rattles off five wins in a row, it will matter not, but, for now, there's a least a seed of doubt.
The good news here is Michigan is next up on the Nittany Lions' schedule.

Losses by SEC West teams to teams not in the SEC West.
Call it propaganda all you want. And maybe the bottom half of the SEC isn't as strong as people think; but there's a reason elite athletes flock to the conference. Is the SEC America's top conference because it recruits better than everyone else or does it recruit better than everyone else because it is America's top conference. Does it even really matter what the answer is at this point?

Points by which UCLA blasted Arizona State over the weekend.
Todd Graham (right) is trying to keep top talent in Arizona, but a blowout loss at home to Jim Mora and UCLA won't help.
A 62-27 clubbing is not exactly what you're looking for against a team that is already picking top talent out of your home state. UCLA has been invading Arizona on the recruiting trail for years, and the Sun Devils have launched a recruiting campaign complete with billboards and flyers in an effort to keep Arizona athletes in Arizona. Getting bullied at home by one of the more prolific raiders of Grand Canyon State talent is more than a little counterproductive.

Four-star quarterbacks still committed to Florida State.
Who says players these days are afraid of competition?
OK, so there's next to no chance they all sign with the Seminoles in February. The question is which player is leaving the island. Deondre Francois, De'Andre Johnson and Kai Locksley are all highly regarded prospects, and it's likely that one of them will find a home with a depth chart more conducive to early playing time. For now, Johnson is the trendy guess.
