NoCal sleeper DB making strides

Defensive back Jalen Hamilton-Haywood (5-11, 167, 4.57) from Sacramento (Calif.) Valley had a very good showing at the NIKE Camp held in Palo Alto. He came into the camp somewhat as a sleeper, but his performance helped get his name on the map.
It doesn't help one's recruitment when you play on a losing team and when you play out of position as Hamilton-Haywood did while playing linebacker could that can further hinder one's opportunities.

While playing out of position Hamilton-Haywood racked up 70 tackles, five sacks and had three fumbles caused in eight games as a junior. His performance earned him all-league honors for his 2006 season.
Look for Hamilton-Haywood to move to his more natural position of defensive back and running back for his senior season. His versatility will see play both safety and corner depending on the situation.
Against teams with top-flight receivers or teams that pass the ball a lot Hamilton-Haywood will line up at corner. Against running teams look for him to play safety.
"I have not received an offer yet, but interest is picking up," Hamilton-Haywood said. "USC, Cal, Washington, UNLV and San Diego State have all come by my school to see me.
"I've received letters from basically everywhere," Hamilton-Haywood said. "Texas Tech, Illinois, and Auburn have sent me letters; basically I'm getting letters from everywhere.
"I'm planning on going to camps at USC, Cal and San Diego State for sure," Hamilton-Haywood said. "I have also been invited to UNLV's camp and I'm going to try to make that camp, too, but I'm not sure I'll make it."
What is Hamilton-Haywood looking for in a college?
"I want to go to a school where I will get a good education that has a good college environment," Hamilton-Haywood said. "I'm also looking to go to school where I can win a championship and develop as a football player.
Hamilton-Haywood is coached by former USC standout defensive Antuan Simmons (1997-2001) and works out with another Sacramento (Calif.) Valley alum Keith Lewis, now a safety for the San Francisco 49ers.
With mentors like Simmons and Lewis it is easy to see why Hamilton-Haywood played as well as he did at the NIKE Camp and will guarantee his improvement as the season moves along.
Hamilton-Haywood is one to watch this fall.
