Martin Luther King on Sept. 26.
Cass Tech Key Prospects
Michael Onwenu
OG Michael Onwenu -- Onwenu committed to
Michigan in early June. He attended camps at other schools this summer,
but they were part of his team's bus tour and he remains solid with the
Wolverines.
DB Demetric Vance -- Vance made a pledge to
Michigan State in May. He recently picked up an offer from
Florida on a visit to Gainesville, but has reaffirmed the strength of
his Michigan State commitment since.
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (2017) --
Peoples-Jones is wide open to the nearly 20 schools that have extended him a
scholarship. His most recent visits were taken to Florida, USC and
CB Donovan Johnson (2017) -- Johnson landed his first
Power Five offer in early July from Tennessee after camping with the Volunteers.
He also holds offers from Cincinnati and Toledo, and is
hearing from schools throughout the Midwest.
LB Tim Walton -- Walton is close to double-digit
offers, but could see that list expand with a big senior season. He recently
visited Illinois and the Illini have to be considered among the top
contenders.
DB Jaylen Kelly-Powell (2017) -- West Virginia recently extended Kelly-Powell his 15th scholarship offer during a
visit to Morgantown in late July. He recently listed Michigan,
recruiting him hardest.
King Key Prospects
Donnie Corley
WR Donnie Corley -- The Rivals100 prospect had planned
to announce in July, but now will take his recruitment into the fall. He has a
Sept. 4 official visit planned to LSU and recently visited Michigan,
Michigan State, Ohio State and West Virginia.
CB Lavert Hill -- Penn State landed Hill's
commitment back in January. He has maintained since that he is 100 percent
committed to the Nittany Lions, but has made unofficial visits to
Michigan and Michigan State in the last few months.
CB Ambry Thomas (2017) -- The Rivals250 prospect came
off a late-July camp at Ohio State saying the Buckeyes would be one of his
finalists when that time came. Visits to Pittsburgh and West Virginia
were also taken recently, and he holds offers from both schools.
RB Martell Pettaway -- Pettaway ended his recruitment
in June with a commitment to West Virginia. He is solidly committed to the
Mountaineers and recruiting several of his teammates to join him.
LB Armani Posey -- A three-star prospect, Posey has
really struggled to generated momentum in his recruitment and still awaits his
first offer. He has switched positions several times and transferred schools,
which has not helped.
Looking Ahead
Lavert Hill
Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State have been the biggest benefactors of top
talent from these two Public School League programs in recent years, but players
from both programs have also gone on to play in the four other Power Five
Conferences in the last eight years as well. While several of the players on
opposite sides of this game travel together to camps and college visits in the
offseason, there is no quarter given on game day. Lavert Hill played in
this game last year wearing the green and white of Cass Tech, but transferred
last winter and will line up for the Crusaders of Detroit King, adding another
interesting story line to this year's game. There is talk about moving the game
back to Friday night, which would allow for more college coaches to attend than
a Saturday afternoon kickoff. With the amount of talent on the field, coaches
would pack the sidelines for a Friday night playing of this contest.
Quotables
Donovan Peoples-Jones
Cass Tech head coach Thomas Wilcher
"For us, it's just the history of the rivalry. We beat them before when they
were undefeated, and they beat us a few years ago when we were undefeated. It
doesn't make a difference about the record, it's who is ready to play that day."
