Bishop Amat Prospects
Tyler Vaughns
WR Tyler Vaughns - The top-rated wide receiver in California plans to make his commitment on Aug. 19. USC is a frontrunner but he also has interest in Alabama and Georgia, though he didn't visit those SEC schools this summer.
WR Trevon Sidney - Sidney is committed to USC.
DB Chris Gaston - Gaston is still waiting for his first offer with Washington and others showing interest.
OL Matthew Brayton - Brayton is committed to UNLV.
Mater Dei Prospects
Curtis Robinson
LB Curtis Robinson - Robinson is committed to Stanford.
OT Frank Martin - Martin is committed to USC.
WR Andre Collins - North Texas is the first offer for Collins, who dealt with a bunch of nagging injuries during his junior season.
WR Osiris St. Brown (2017) - Miami, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame are some early offers for St. Brown, who transferred from Anaheim (Calif.) Servite for his junior season.
DB Jalen Cole (2017) - Colorado State is Cole's first offer but many others could come soon.
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (2018) - Boise State, Notre Dame, Utah and Washington State have already offered.
Looking Ahead
Frank Martin
The Bishop Amat-Mater Dei contest is a huge, early season contest that pits top prospects on both teams, many of whom saw each other time and time again on the 7-on-7 circuit. Now it's time to put the pads on and play real football.
USC fans should flood the Santa Ana Bowl since they could see a big part of the future at wide receiver with Sidney and Vaughns, who has USC among his favorites. (He will be committed someplace before this game is played). On the other side, Martin is a mauler at offensive tackle and should have his way through his senior season. Robinson had a nice junior season and an excellent summer so he could be a special recruit on both sides of the ball. Both teams are heavy on committed seniors so it's unlikely there will be a lot of swayed minds one way or another, but USC commits should be well represented in this game and that should excite a lot of local fans.
Quotables
Trevon Sidney
Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty:
"(Vaughns and Sidney) are definitely both really talented kids but I don't look at it that way. To beat Mater Dei we're going to have to play a great game and it has to outweigh what Tyler and Trevon do. We're going to have to play a complete game against Mater Dei. Last year is over. This is a new year. There are a lot of unknowns. I just know they'll be well prepared and ready to play. Their kids expect to win and so do we.
"Like any Pac-5 team, they're well-coached and they're not going to come in and say, 'Oh, wow, we have a game tonight.' They're focused on it. I don't think it has the implications people think in terms of the rest of the year. It's two good programs getting ready to play the rest of the season."
