NFL Combine: Programs that produced the most invitees

The NFL officially announced its list of the 330 players invited to participate in the NFL Combine on Wednesday. The annual pre-draft scouting event is set to take place Feb. 28-March 6, with several former stars of the high school and college football world scheduled to compete.

Which programs are sending the most players to Indianapolis to the event and how might it impact recruiting? We break down the teams with the most to boast about.

MICHIGAN

Players invited: 14

Headliners: DB Jabrill Peppers, TE Jake Butt

Farrell’s take: Michigan’s recruiting has taken the next step under Jim Harbaugh, but it wasn’t shabby at all under Brady Hoke, so this isn’t a surprise. This proves that there was talent in Ann Arbor, but it just took the right coach to get it to show on the field.

ALABAMA

Players invited: 10

Headliners: DE Jonathan Allen, LB Reuben Foster, DB Marlon Humphrey

Farrell’s take: This number is actually surprisingly low for Alabama, but after last year’s group, it’s probably smart to expect a steady stream of double-digit combine invites year after year. The number of five-stars is ridiculous, led by the trio above.

LSU

Players invited: 10

Headliners: RB Leonard Fournette, LB Kendell Beckwith, DB Jamal Adams

Farrell’s take: LSU had one of the most talented rosters in college football last year. Recruiting under Les Miles was never the real issue. The defense was loaded and the offense had a ton of talent as well, but that was all undone by the lack of quarterback development and offensive creativity.

CLEMSON

Players invited: 9

Headliners: QB Deshaun Watson, WR Mike Williams, LB Ben Boulware

Farrell’s take: Clemson is the team on this list that has taken the biggest step in recruiting in the last four or five years and it’s starting to show in the draft. Watson is the headliner and biggest recruit by far, but the rest of the group, led by Williams, is impressive as well. The Tigers continue to churn out amazing receivers.

MIAMI

Brad Kaaya

Players invited: 9

Headliners: QB Brad Kaaya, WR Stacy Coley, DE Al-Quadin Muhammad

Farrell’s take: Al Golden recruited some players but, like Brady Hoke, just never got the most out of them. However, unlike Hoke, Golden walked into an awful situation, so he gets more of a pass. Coley is home-grown while Kaaya and Muhammad came from afar, perhaps one of the faults of the Golden era as well.

TEXAS A&M

Texas A&M

Players invited: 9

Headliners: DE Myles Garrett, DE Daeshon Hall, WR Josh Reynolds

Farrell’s take: The Aggies always seem to have a ton of talent in the draft, especially in recent years. Kevin Sumlin’s recruiting has never been the issue at all. The fast starts to a season followed by slow finishes is even more glaring when you consider how many players the Aggies have produced at the top half of the draft.
