Despite rushing for over 1,000 yards as a sophomore and winning the state title, Tre Newton is one of the more humble prospects in the North Texas area.
The son of former Dallas Cowboys star Nate Newton, Newton is expected to be one of the more highly recruited running backs in the state for the class of 2008. No scholarship offers have come, but his great sophomore season and big start to his junior year is laying the groundwork for big offers.
"I get a lot mail, but I'm trying not to get too caught up in all that just yet," Newton said. "Pretty much all of the Division I schools out there have sent something."
Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Iowa State are just a few schools that Newton says he remembers getting stuff from.
"Right now, this early, I'm keeping my eyes open to everybody," Newton said. "I'm looking at each individual college equally. I haven't started thinking about visits yet. I may just stay home this fall and see if anything happens and see what I get from people."
The Southlake Carroll Dragons and Newton are undefeated thus far on the season at 3-0. Newton has already compiled 335 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
"I just want to be a big contributor to my team this year and help them better than I did last year," he said. "I want to be the guy they turn to."
