Newell is looking to play defense

Defensive end Keith Newell out of Trenton (N.J.) Trenton Central hoped to come out of Elite College Combine with some looks from schools as a defensive end. The 6-foot-7, 280-pounder did just that and schools are starting to look at him in a whole new light.
"I went to the Elite and it was a real fun experience," he said. "I did well running the 40 in 5.1-seconds and the shuttle in 4.9-seconds. In the one-on-ones I did pretty well too, I felt like I showed my quickness, versatility, power and finesse. I played on defense for the day and am starting to get more looks there.

"Personally I prefer attacking better than defending. I have a lot of athleticism and agility for a guy my size and I want people to be able to see that I can play defensive end."
Currently Newell holds two offers from Illinois and Rutgers. He thinks some other schools could be coming with an offer soon.
"I think Notre Dame and perhaps Ohio State could offer sometime," he said. "I believe that mostly because I noticed a lot of their scouts were eyeing me at the combine. I also was told through the grapevine that both of them are very interested, but I know of course it's still a rumor."
Meanwhile other schools have stopped by Trenton including Miami and Rutgers.
At this point in time, the Garden State prospect claims no favorites. What is he looking for out of a school?
"Location of course is big for me because I'd like to stay on the East Coast," he said. "I'll also be looking at the program and how their athletes do in the classroom. I want to go somewhere that has a high graduation rate so that I know I'll get my degree. Finally, one other big factor for me is the possibility to play defense. I'd really prefer that."
Growing up Newell was a big fan of the Wolverines and Buckeyes. Could that play a role in his decision?
"Basically when I was younger both of those schools were some of the top teams in college football," he said. "I naturally followed them and enjoyed watching who they sent into the pros. Both of those schools are very accomplished programs with great traditions and I think it could be a slight influence in my decision, but nothing major."
This summer Newell has plans to head to two camps at Penn State and Miami.
Last season he earned first team all-conference and all-area honors as a junior.
