BALTIMORE -- When people think about recruiting hotbeds, Long Island is usually not the first location that comes to mind.
Class of 2017 quarterback Jack Coan of Sayville, N.Y. will be looking to change that, for at least a year, as he already has six offers and is getting interest from many of the other top programs in the nation.
Coan actually committed to play lacrosse at Notre Dame last summer, but then changed his mind after his recent recruiting success for football.
"After I got the Michigan offer I felt that more schools would be coming after me," said Coan, who mentioned that he has not heard from Notre Dame regarding football. "I feel like I have a future in college football and it's always been my dream to play college football so I'm trying to pursue that dream."
Miami was the first school to offer Coan, followed by Michigan, Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers and Stony Brook. His only visit to this point has been to Rutgers.
"I thought it was a great visit," he said. "Coach Flood and the whole coaching staff there are really good guys and I enjoyed watching their practice and seeing their meetings."
Next on the schedule are camp trips to Michigan, Stanford and Florida, which he feels may be the closest schools to offering next. He hopes to prove a few things to those coaching staffs.
"I'm just going to show them what I have," Coan said. "I'm going to put my best foot forward and show them that I'm a great quarterback."
With all of his offers and interest coming in the last two months, it has been an eye-opening experience for Coan.
"It has been really exciting," he said. "To know that all of these schools want you to come there is really cool and exciting."
After setting Long Island records for touchdown passes (40) and yards passing (3,431) during his sophomore season, Coan has been working overtime to take his game to the next level this fall.
"I'm working on everything," he said. "No quarterback will ever be perfect, so I'm working on everything. I'm working on my arm strength, trying to gain some weight and trying to work on my velocity and accuracy."
