New Syracuse verbal speaks out

The Syracuse football program has shown signs of life in 2009 after struggling in recent years and the Orange picked up a commitment from one of their top targets on Sunday.

Dyshawn Davis, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect from Woodbury, New Jersey, told the Syracuse coaches that he wanted to join the program early Sunday afternoon.

"I just verbally committed to Syracuse," Davis confirmed. "It was probably around one o'clock.

"I had communicated with the coaches and the coaches knew me well. Over the summer I was there for a camp. They took a look at me and saw what I could do, and they said they were going to offer me once I got everything right with my (grades). I did that, so my grades are right now.

"They sent me up for a game and I was talking to them and they were talking about what my future would be like. I went up for the game yesterday and I liked what I saw. I couldn't see myself anywhere else. Right now it's just looking like the best thing for me. It wasn't an official visit or anything, I was just there for the game."

So what does Davis like so much about the Orange?

"Because it just seems like it's where I want to go as far as my future is concerned. I would love to graduate from Syracuse and have a degree from Syracuse. I know it's a good program and the coaches are nice, really cool guys. They just showed me what my future would look like going there."

Davis had been hearing from Rutgers and UConn in addition to several other schools prior to making his decision.

Though he is now a solid verbal for the 'Cuse, Davis didn't close any doors down the road.

"My options are still open but as of right now I'm a verbal commit. As of right now I'm going to Syracuse."

The Orange have recruited Davis as a wide receiver. He plans on taking his official visit to Syracuse in December, but he isn't sure which day it will be yet.

On the year he has caught 10 passes for about 210 yards and three touchdowns for Woodbury.
