New school for Rivals250 ATH Terry Lockett

Minnehaha (Minn.) Academy had a junior class of football prospects that could rival any across the nation, but that group has lost one of its top members. Four-star athlete Terry Lockett has left the Minneapolis-area school and is already playing for a new program in a new state.

THE LATEST

Lockett has enrolled in the Spire Academy near Cleveland Ohio. Spire is not too unlike IMG Academy in Florida, except that they do not have a football program. A two-sport star, Lockett will be playing basketball for Spire, but he is playing football for nearby Saint John High School in Asthabula. The football season in Ohio has already kicked off and Lockett will suit up for Saint John this Friday. He holds early offers from Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska in football and one from Howard in basketball. Additional schools have already started showing interest since the contact rules for juniors were loosened on Sept. 1.

IN HIS WORDS

“I have been talking to coaches and I don’t think playing both (sports) is a possibility. I think they are waiting on me to choose one. Coming to (Spire) it will help me play both and make a decision. I just felt like this was the fit for me. I just think going through the schedule I’ll be going through, it will make me a better overall athlete for the next level.

“I have been talking to Stanford a lot and just talked to UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. I’ll be trying to (visit) those two for sure.”

RIVALS’ REACTION

This is more an interesting fact than anything to do with Lockett specifically at this time, but Asthabula Saint John is the alma mater of Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes did offer Lockett’s former teammate at Minnehaha, four-star quarterback Jalen Suggs, back in June, so they undoubtedly have some knowledge of who Lockett is. Whether that turns into an active recruitment, though, remains to be seen. West Coast schools picking up the chase is more interesting, and the interest is mutual. Lockett has excelled as a wide receiver thus far in his prep career, but expects to add defensive responsibilities this fall and already has schools interested in him for that side of the football.
