New Orleans product holds one offer

One of the most consistently talented programs in the New Orleans area is New Orleans (La.) O. Perry Walker. After sending multiple players to Division-I programs in the 2009 class, there are a few more stars in the class of 2010. One of them is offensive guard Charles Barkins.
At 6-foot-1, 300 pounds, Barkins is thick interior lineman but he is also athletic. He showed off that athleticism this year on the basketball court.

"I've been playing basketball and our season just ended Monday," Barkins said. "We lost to Salmen 38-54 in the final four game to go the championship. Other than that I've been working out doing things that a football player does to win a state championship."
With his strength and size, it comes as a bit of a surprise when Barkins talks about his role on the hardwood.
"I played the four and small forward and I was mainly a shooter," he said. "I averaged about 10 points and about 11 rebounds. Basketball helps me a lot. It gives me a whole different type of shape. Basketball shape and football shape are two different things. Basketball your constantly running so in the fourth quarter I can feel like it's just the first quarter."
On the recruiting trail, Barkins has already picked up an offer from Louisiana Tech and is hearing from the likes of Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Baylor, Kansas State and Oklahoma. There is one school in particular that he hopes to pick up an offer from.
"I want Alabama to offer me because I like their program and their facilities and everything else," he said. "I just like the school. I love to compete and they have a lot of young players competing for spots and I want to be one of those guys to compete."
Barkins did attend the LSU junior day but has not been able to make any others to date. He does plan to be active this spring and summer though.
"I plan on going to a lot of camps, going on unofficial visits, etc. just to see how it is on campus and make my final choice."
