New name pops up in Metroplex

Tight end/athlete J.B. Phillips is a new name in the Dallas Metroplex that is suddenly popping up more and more in the mind’s of college coaches.
“I guess I’ve had a good season and that’s attracting more attention,” said Phillips, who is 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds. “We’re 5-0, team is ranked No. 1 in the area and we’re climbing the poles in the state. I’m playing tight end, defensive tackle and defensive end. I’m going both ways, which is really tough because we go against some really good teams.”

But it’s that toughness that has started to make Phillips one of the hottest commodity’s in the Dallas Metroplex in the eyes of college coaches. He has one scholarship offer from Louisiana Lafayette, but all of a sudden his list is exploding with impressive teams like Oklahoma, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Louisville and countless others.
“I’m just starting to think about all of this recruiting stuff,” he said. “Honestly, I’m trying to keep it up and see what happens. I want to wait until after the season before I get really serious about this. The attention is great and I love it. I love talking to the coaches.”
What the coaches like about Phillips is his combination of size and speed. Phillips has been clocked at 4.67-seconds in the 40-yard dash.
“I know Geoffrey (Price) and I are going to go over to the Cotton Bowl on Saturday,” Phillips said about he and his teammate’s plans for this weekend. “I can’t wait to see what it’s like in that big game atmosphere.”
