New Mexico sleeper can play

If linebacker Zach Arnett (5-11, 200, 4.5) from Albuquerque (N.M.) La Cueva had more size, he would be more than a sleeper. He is gritty, tough and gives everything he has, whistle-to-whistle.
“Zach is our passion player,” La Cueva coach Fred Romero said. “He ignites our entire defense.”

That is heady praise by a coach who is in charge of one the nation’s best defenses statistically. In seven games, La Cueva has only allowed 14 points.
Another thing that may have hindered Arnett’s recruitment is he has been banged up and has missed three games this season. He could have played but since La Cueva is the opposition out Romero was able to hold him out and save him for the tougher playoff games ahead.
Though Arnett has missed three games and parts of other game because La Cueva had the game in hand before halftime, he still has racked up 25 tackles, five quarterback pressures, one sack and one pick.
Arnett also sees time on the offensive side of the ball as a fullback. He is used primarily as a battering ram blocker. He has carried the ball 16 times and has racked up 125 yards and one touchdown.
“Zach means a lot to our football team,” Romero said. “He’s our team captain, he’s a sure tackler and he makes plays.”
Arnett is also a talented baseball player and he may get looks fro his skills as a catcher.
Right now the two schools showing the most interest are the two in-state schools New Mexico and New Mexico State.
According to Romero, Arnett is another one of those players that if given a chance, could make someone looking pretty smart.
