A.J. Davis is considered by many to be one of the top cornerback prospects in the entire country. As good as he is at football, he may be even better on a track.
As good as Davis is on the track, it is not surprising that the speedster out of Durham, North Carolina is looking to play both sports in college. “The school that I choose will need to be supportive of me doing both sports in college,” Davis said. “That might be the biggest factor in my decision. Most of the schools are recruiting me to play both sports.”
Davis, who claims a 4.3-second forty-yard dash, caught 30 passes for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense. As a cornerback on defense, Davis had 26 tackles to go along with 6 interceptions (3 of which were returned for touchdowns). He also tallied 4 punt return touchdowns as a junior.
Davis has over 40 scholarship offers. “Oklahoma, Alabama, Nebraska, Missouri, Notre Dame, Clemson, Tennessee, Georgia, East Carolina and others have all offered,” Davis said. “Missouri is probably recruiting me the hardest. I haven’t really narrowed things down too much yet. I want to sign where I feel that I can spend the next 4 years of my life. I want the school to feel like home.”
“I already have a visit to Notre Dame set up for October 5th. I really don’t have a favorite though. I will try to have everything narrowed down by the end of September.”
Davis said that he has not timetable on his decision. “If I feel that the time is right, I will make my decision,” Davis said. “I’ll try to take as many of my visits as I can in December, after my season is complete. I don’t want to take too many during the season. I want to concentrate on the season and try to win a state championship.”
COMMENTS ON EARLY FAVORITES:
ALABAMA - “I know a coach at Alabama,” Davis said. “They have been recruiting me a long time. I know people that go there and I want to see it for myself. The NCAA investigation doesn’t really concern me.”
NOTRE DAME - “I’ve heard great things about Notre Dame,” Davis said. “They are recruiting me in both track and football. I’ll look at them pretty hard.”
MISSOURI - “I like the way they have been recruiting me,” Davis said. “They really allow an athlete to play two sports there. They coordinate and work football and track together. That is important.”
EAST CAROLINA - “I like them,” Davis said. “They are pretty close to home and have a great football tradition. Greenville is like a home away from home.”
