Tiawan Mullen’s older brother, Trayvon Mullen, signed with Clemson on Signing Day 2016. So, far, the Tigers are nowhere to be found in the recruitment of the younger defensive back, but that bothers Tiawan Mullen not. He’s content to make his own path and, nearly two years before he’ll sign with a college, seems to be doing just that.

Mullen recently visited both Florida and Florida State for the schools’ respective spring games. He doesn’t list an offer from either in-state program just yet, but the class-of-2019 defensive back expects that to change in the near future.

“The game [at Florida State] was awesome,” Mullen said by text on Monday. “It was a great atmosphere there. … I think they are very close to an offer. I talk to one of the coaches from time to time about it.”

Mullen’s spring game experience at Florida the night before was just as memorable. According to the Coconut Creek (Fla.) High School standout, the Gators could also be on the verge of making things official. And when he talks about, UF, he talks about the defensive scheme. Mullen, it seems, sees a fit for himself in Gainesville.

“I went to Florida Friday,” Mullen said. “It was great. They were great. I love the way the defense swarms to the ball. I see they let young guys play.”

Mullen currently holds offers from Michigan State, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville and others. He lists no favorite sin the process but plans to name a few frontrunners at the end of spring practice.

RIVALS REACTION: It’s too early to make any guesses on where Mullen may land. The in-state schools could offer and make a splash and the possibility of Clemson is still lurking in the weeds. The picture of his recruitment will clear up significantly by the fall.
