Montes has two offers

College coaches look far and wide for prospects with size and athleticism that can play. Even players that do not have a ton of experience can impress recruiters during the evaluation period. That is exactly the case with Rex Montes of Colleyville (Texas) Heritage.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound two-way player lined up behind a senior last year and also played out of position. However, that has not stopped him from picking up a pair of offers already.

"I've been offered by Arkansas State and the Air Force Academy," Montes said. "They both offered me during spring ball, around May. They sort of come out of the blue. We hadn't sent anything to either Air Force or Arkansas State.
"I really only played half the time last year. I didn't even play on the outside either. I played on the interior at tackle."
Montes can play either defensive end or tight end at the next level but he says he has no preference.
"Both of them offered me as a defensive end," he said. "It doesn't matter to me if I play offense or defense. If they offer me a scholarship I'll play wherever they want me to play."
In addition to the two schools that have offered, Montes is hearing from several other programs as well.
"I'm getting a lot of mail from Oregon, UTEP, Kansas State, Baylor and some others," he said. "Those are the big ones. I've been to Arkansas, Baylor, Oregon, Texas Tech and Air Force this summer.
"I don't think anybody else is going to offer until Week Four, maybe. They want to see me play outside in a game against real offensive linemen."
Montes is in no hurry to make a decision but does admit that some programs stand out to him at the moment.
"Obviously, who wouldn't like Oregon," he said. "Out of the two that have offered me, Air Force is really nice. I think Air Force, Kansas State and Oregon would be my favorites right now."
Montes tallied 39 solo tackles and 19 assists as a junior while adding two sacks and two forced fumbles.
