It seems fitting that the first offer for cornerback Demetrius Monday of Fairburn (Ga.) Arlington Christian School came, you guessed it, on Monday.
"Akron offered," Monday told Rivals.com. "I was excited. All my hard work paid off. All of my hard work had finally been noticed. I think that's going to put me on the map, get me over the edge and get me noticed."
A 5-feet-11, 185-pounder, Monday registered four interceptions in 2011. The year before, he had two. In December, he competed in the Rising Seniors Georgia Junior Bowl.
Colleges have taken notice.
Besides Akron, Monday has interest from schools such as Cincinnati, Michigan State, Middle Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
"Cincinnati is very interested," Monday said. "They told my trainer they're very close to offering. They want to check with all the coaches and make sure. That's what I was told."
What's next for Monday?
"This weekend I'm visiting Vanderbilt on Saturday and Middle Tennessee on Sunday," Monday said. "I'm going to South Carolina the week after that."
Thus far, Monday likes what he has seen and heard from Akron, which he visited last weekend.
"[Cornerbacks coach Terrell Buckley] was telling me he liked my size and my work ethic," Monday said. "I just went up there. I got to meet the head coach and the defensive coach. It went real good. They wanted me to come back for camps. They said they'd love to have me there."
Monday particularly enjoyed meeting head coach Terry Bowden.
"He's a very nice coach," Monday said. "He liked to connect with you on a personal level. He was just a cool guy. I think you can talk to him about anything."
