Moffitt down to three

West Haven (Conn.) Notre Dame offensive guard John Moffitt didn't particularly enjoy his trip to Virginia last weekend, but the 6-foot-4, 290-pound lineman got a pleasant surprise when he returned Sunday night.
"I got back from my trip on Sunday night and Penn State called me and they are very interested," he said. "Penn State was always on my mind, but the problem was that they hadn't called me that much and it finally picked back up on Sunday. If they offer I'd definitely like to go out there for an official visit. I think they are still working on an offer and want to see more film which my coach just sent out.

"I went on an unofficial up there and got a good feel from it. I like that its close and the atmosphere and coaches are great too. They have a revamped program and the way they have been playing this season is really impressive. I always thought they'd be good, but I'm impressed how they've handled the Big Ten."
Currently the Nittany Lions are one of three teams remaining for Moffitt. The others are Michigan State who he took an official to last month and Wisconsin who he plans to take an official to this weekend.
"This weekend I'm looking to get a feel for the area, atmosphere and team on my visit up there," he said. "I know coach Alvarez is leaving after this year and I want to see how that is going to pan out. I want to see if coach Bielema plans to make some big changes in the program or what. I also hope to see a good game and hopefully Wisconsin pulls out a win. Finally, I'd like to know how they plan to use me. I know most schools are gearing me towards the offensive side, but I'd like to get a shot on defense since I enjoy playing both ways."
A lot of schools have recently jumped in the race for the two-star prospect.
"I've been getting interest from Boston College, Purdue, Maryland and others," he said. "I'm not interested really in any of them as I feel I'm their second or third option since they finally have come back around to me. I also feel I can't go wrong with my top three schools. I really like that they are all in the Big Ten because it's like a family atmosphere there and they care about you as a person."
Moffitt has helped Notre Dame to a 5-1 record.
"I'm playing my best season ever this year," he said. "Last game I had an exceptional performance with two sacks and 12 tackles. I felt like I was all over the place. This time last year I would have gotten tired out going both ways for four quarters, but this year I feel alive."
