Simley High School (Minn.) quarterback prospect Marcel Jones (6-foot-4, 205 pounds) will be a rare four year varsity starter in 2004, and this coaches son and standout athlete has been drawing steady recruiting interest this off season.
"I've been getting steady mail from Iowa State, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Boston College, Illinois and Indiana," Marcel Jones said. "I've gotten hand-written letters from Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. I also went to junior days at Minnesota and Wisconsin, and I really enjoyed my time at both schools."
So what are some of the factors that Marcel Jones is considering in a potential college? "I'm looking to play close to home, and I would love to play somewhere in the Big 10 conference, yet I'm also not ruling any school out at this point. I'm also looking hard at the educational aspect as well. I want to study history in college, and I want to teach history on the college level, so the schools I'm looking at must have a very strong history department."
Jones is also planning on a busy spring and summer as well. "During spring break my Dad and I are planning to get in the car and were going to check out some spring practices. Both Minnesota and Iowa have invited us out to see a practice, and we also might go to a few other schools as well. Then this summer I'm planning on camping at Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Iowa State."
Jones, who as a junior in 2003 compiled over 2,100 total yards of offense for Simley, also played safety as well as being a regular contributor on special teams (punter/kick returner). Would anyone expect anything less from a coaches son? "It's been great playing for my Dad. It definitely has it's advantages, especially since I have been hanging around him at various football games and practices since I was a little kid. We run a Run and Gun spread offense, and I've been able to really study that offense since the 6th grade with my Dad."
