Mixed results during Week 2 of the Big 12

The second week of Big 12 football wasn't as successful as the first for the conference with half of the North Division suffering upset losses. The South Division held its own with five teams pulling out wins, including the Big 12's lone ranked teams as of Monday, No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 6 Texas.

By the numbers

3- The number of field goals missed by Iowa State true freshman Brian Jansen in a 17-10 loss to Iowa.

8 - Antonio Perkins tied the NCAA record set by former Texas Tech star Wes Welker with his eighth career punt return for a score in Oklahoma's 63-13 victory.

11- The number of turnovers committed by Nebraska in its first two games of the season. The Cornhuskers gave away the ball five times in their 21-17 loss to Southern Mississippi.

14 - Consecutive seasons Kansas State had started 2-0 before losing 45-21 to Fresno State to drop to 1-1.

63 - Points Kansas scored in its 49-point win over Toledo. The last team to score that many points in Lawrence was Kansas State when it defeated Kansas 64-0 on Nov., 2, 2002.

63 again - The yards rumbled by Troy guard Junior Louissaint during his fumble recovery for a touchdown against Missouri.

125 - Total net yards Colorado had in its 20-12 win over Washington State.

191 - Yards rushing by Oklahoma State running back Vernand Morency including a six-yard touchdown with just under four minutes to play that helped put away Tulsa 38-21.

277 - More total net yards Washington State had (402) during its loss to Colorado.

342 - Total yards Reggie McNeal finished with in A&M's 31-0 rout of Wyoming. McNeal completed 17-of-24 passes for 298 yards and ran for another 44.

308 - Career points for Texas running back Cedric Benson tying him for third on Texas' all-time list. Benson had two touchdowns in the Longhorn's 22-20 win at Arkansas.

Heisman Hopefuls? After all the preseason hype of Brad Smith, Darren Sproles, Jason White and Benson two Big 12 preseason Heisman hopefuls are still going strong. Smith and Sproles took hits to their chances during last weekend's losses. Smith had a hard time finding the Troy safeties during pass plays, and though Sproles' overall performance was solid, people recognize him for what he does on the ground and the 37 yards rushing will hurt him. Current Heisman winner Jason White stayed consistent and is now 35 of 49 for 495 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Cedric Benson carried Texas to another victory and is sitting at 369 yards on 44 carries and four touchdowns (one receiving).

Any Vacancies? Though his chances at getting a seat in New York are slim given the Cowboys schedule, Oklahoma State's Morency is making a play for Big 12 Player of the Year. Morency is averaging 222.5 yards per game for a team that still hasn't surpassed 100 total passing yards on the season.

Three Star: Kansas quarterback Adam Barmann threw for 310 yards and four first-half touchdowns to lead the Jayhawks to a 63-14 win over Toledo. Also considered: Colorado linebacker Joe Sanders

Two or fewer stars: Texas Tech wide receiver Jarrett Hicks caught nine passes for 150 yards in the Red Raiders loss. Also considered: Kansas defensive end Charlton Keith

Reggie McNeal extended his lead in the race to 1,000 yards rushing and passing with his performance against Wyoming. McNeal now has 508 yards passing and 128 yards rushing. With rushing yards being the premium in this race, Texas' Vince Young overtakes Missouri's Brad Smith for second place with 303 yards passing and 105 yards rushing. Smith is a close third with 457 yards passing and 99 yards on the ground.
