Northeast Mississippi Commuity College defensive back
Lee Hayes says he'll be a Memphis
Tiger.
"I like the opportunity I have there," he said. "They have me down to start
right away. I think Memphis has a real nice defense. I'm looking forward to
playing in it.
"I also had a good relationship with their coaches and players for a long
time. There's at least four of us (Hayes, Tyus Jackson, Chris Kelley, Jason Matthews) going from Northeast, so it will be nice to have those
guys around."
Hayes (5-10, 175. 4.4) picked the Tigers over Mississippi State. He was also
receiving interest from Kentucky and Temple.
Originally from Hopkinsville (Ky.) High School, Hayes signed with Arkansas in
2000 but left the program after pleading guilty to misdemeanor shoplifting
charges in July of 2001. He bounced back -- personally and athletically -- with
a solid season at Northeast in 2002, establishing a reputation as one of the
league's top cover men and recording three interceptions.
