Michigan State adds commitment from Atlanta DB Tre Person

The Latest: It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake defensive back Tre Person. The longtime Georgia Southern saw interest roll in from several new programs, including Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and Michigan State. But after an official visit to East Lansing this past weekend, Person saw enough to not only flip his commitment to the Spartans, but shut down his recruitment for good. Rivals.com caught up with Person shortly after he announced his decision to break everything down.

In His Words: “It was great to get up there on campus and really get a feel for what it’s like. They treated us like family from the start and they were really genuine about everything. There was no sugar coating stuff, they kept it 100 with me on everything, what it’s like, what I need to do to play, everything like that.”

On chance to play: “They basically said that one corner is kind of established but they view the other position as wide open and I can come in and compete. That’s all I can ask for is a chance to come compete.”

On when he knew he would commit: “Last night when I got back to the hotel I thought about it for about 30 minutes and it just felt right to me. This morning I got up and talked to my mom about it and we went over and talked to Coach Dantonio and gave him the news. He was really excited to hear it and I can’t wait to play for him.”

On how it all came together so fast: “The visit really cleared all that stuff up for me. When they first came in they were so late and I wasn’t really sure how much I would look at them. But I built a relationship with Coach Barnett over time. He started talking to me in December and by the time the offer came we knew each other. He said that they didn’t even know about me or see my film until another coach in the area told him about me. After that they knew I could play. Now I’m committed and I couldn’t be happier. Just ready to get there to get to work and I’m shutting everything else down.”

Rivals Reaction: Person was overshadowed on a secondary that also featured 5-star A.J. Terrell, 2018 Rivals100 defensive back Myles Sims and Georgia State defensive back commit Chris Bacon. But once his senior film made the rounds several schools jumped in, including the Spartans. He’s a late get but could be the type of guy who blossoms under the right college coaching.
