Class of 2016 Huntersville (N.C.) Southlake Christian Academy running back Robert Washington picked up his first college scholarship offer up before he ever played a high school down. With that kind of talent, it was only a matter of time before more schools joined the list. With more than 10 offers on his plate, Washington is starting to trim down his list.
"There have been a lot of schools coming on stronger lately," Washington said. "Syracuse has been showing a lot of love - their fans are very active on Twitter and Boston College has been showing a lot of love, too."
One of the schools that has been a constant for Washington over the past year or so is Michigan. With a change at offensive coordinator in the mix, some have wondered if the Wolverines will remain in the picture.
"I'm going to go up there and check everything out in the spring," Washington said. "The change at offensive coordinator isn't really a big change for me because I'm still close with (running backs) coach Fred Jackson. He's not going anywhere and that's important."
With Doug Nussmeier leaving Alabama for Michigan, Washington said he hopes to see the Wolverines run a similar attack.
"I love Alabama's offense," he said. "I'm going to lie. They do feature their running backs and I want to go to a school where I can get carries at a young age and I can play early."
With junior day visits planned to schools like Syracuse, Boston College, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and TCU, Washington will be racking up the frequent flier miles. He said the possibility of leaving North Carolina to go to school isn't something he's opposed to.
"If I have a good relationship with the coaches and the school fits me, then going far from home wouldn't be an issue," he said. "If I can play early then that would be a big factor, too."
After being recruited by James Franklin and company while they were at Vanderbilt, Washington said Penn State is now a real option.
"I already had a good relationship with him and the coaches," Washington said. "So it's just a matter of changing things to focus on Penn State and for me to build a relationship with them there."
