The recruitment of Portage (Mich.) Northern running back Anthony Tyus III is coming to a close. The three-star prospect is set to announce his college commitment later this week.
“I plan on announcing June 11, this Thursday,” Tyus reported. “The hats that are going to be on the table are Central Michigan, Iowa State, Indiana, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Northwestern and Cincinnati.”
Recruiting has been in a dead period for all but 13 days out of the last four months. That erased Tyus’ off-season visit plans, so the southwest Michigan back has had to “experience” his top schools virtually.
“I have been able to go on a few virtual visits that coaches have set up for me,” Tyus said. “I’ve done a few Zoom calls, player panels and things like that.
“In terms of the research on schools, I would honestly have to give the credit to my dad. He has been doing a lot of research for me as I have been busy. My parents, in general, have helped me a lot with the research, figure out what’s best for me based on what I’m looking for and things like that. My family really, really supported me and I really appreciate them.”
Among the factors Tyus weighed while coming to his decision was finding a place where his parents and brothers could make all of his home games, a place where he had developed a good relationship with the head coach, offensive coordinator and running backs coach, and a place where he could impact early in his career.
Throughout the coronavirus lockdown Tyus was busy with schoolwork and keeping in shape, but also with his involvement in Jeter’s Leaders, a youth leadership program developed by MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. The highly-selective program is only open to high school students in New York City’s metropolitan area and Jeter’s hometown of Kalamazoo.
The 6-foot, 210-pound Tyus has not yet decided on a time to announce his commitment, but it will occur sometime this Thursday.
