The updated preseason rankings for the class of 2018 have been released and there has been plenty of movement in the team rankings over the last couple months. Catch up with some of the biggest storylines here.

IN-STATE SUCCESS KEEPING MIAMI ATOP RANKINGS

It's been a relatively quiet summer for the Miami Hurricanes, but they did add two massive commitments. Long time lean Al Blades went public with his commitment to Miami, following in the footsteps of many of his family members. The Hurricanes also got a verbal commitment from Rivals250 offensive lineman John Campbell.

Miami now holds 17 commitments from players from Florida - 16 if you account for IMG Academy quarterback Artur Sitkowski being from New Jersey. Blades and Campbell helped raise Miami's average star rating per commit substantially but the move of Mark Pope to five-star status made a very big difference here. Those additions and Pope's rankings move helped the Canes stay atop the team rankings as they are clinging to a 27-point lead over Penn State despite the Nittany Lions' big summer haul of 11 commitments.

WELCOME BACK TO THE PARTY

Say "hello" to Texas and Florida again. The Longhorns were pretty high in the team rankings in June when the player rankings were last updated, but they've moved up even more after their outstanding summer. Tom Herman and his staff have landed verbal commitments from eight four-star prospects since the beginning of June highlighted by high four-stars B.J. Foster, Jalen Green and Brennan Eagles. There is a decent sized gap between Texas at No. 4 in the team rankings and Ohio State at No. 3 and both figure to add more commitments throughout the season.

Florida's success this offseason has been well-documented as well. Out of the 17 prospects committed to Florida, 13 of them have committed since the beginning of June when the Gators were ranked No. 29 in the team rankings. There was a four-day stretch in July where six prospects announced their commitments to Florida and two of them, wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase and quarterback Matt Corral, are currently the highest-ranked players in this Florida recruiting class.

DAWGS RUNNING DOWN THE COMPETITION

When the last rankings update was released, Georgia was sitting at No. 67 in the team rankings and was mentioned as a team with a small recruiting class that could eventually rise to near the top of the rankings. Now the Bulldogs are at No. 25 after reeling in nine commitments since the beginning of June. Seven of those nine commitments are from prospects ranked at least four-stars and one of them, Zamir White, is a five-star. Even better news for Georgia fans, only one team ranked ahead of the Dawgs has fewer commitments than they do. That means they have more potential to move up the rankings than nearly every team in the top 25.

SEC SHOWING UP AGAIN

One of the big storylines throughout this recruiting cycle has been the lack of success most of the SEC has had on the recruiting trail. That storyline is dead at this point. Seven SEC teams are currently in the top 20 of the team rankings while the Big Ten and ACC have three, the Big 12 has four and the Pac-12 has two. Tennessee and LSU were the two highest-ranked SEC teams in June but now Florida has leapfrogged LSU. Kentucky remained in the top 20 while South Carolina and Mississippi State made a modest move up. The big mover here is Texas A&M. The Aggies jumped from No. 31 up to No. 13 with commitments from nine players, five of which are four-star prospects highlighted by defensive end Max Wright, defensive back Leon O'Neal and wide receiver Jalen Preston. Two other SEC teams outside the top 20 that made significant moves are Alabama at No. 30 (was No. 60) and the aforementioned Georgia Bulldogs.

POWER FIVE CONFERENCE RANKINGS

It's the beginning of the football season, so it's as good a time as any to check in on how the conferences compare in some key categories in the team rankings. The SEC has taken the lead in the average points per team category and they have the most four-star commitments at this point in the rankings cycle.

The Big Ten has the second highest average points per team, second most five-star commitments and is tied with the ACC with the second most four-star commitments. The Big Ten also has the most total commitments out of all the Power Five conferences and the most three-star commitments.

The Pac-12 is still behind the rest of the other Power Five conferences in many of the major categories. They have the fewest teams in the top 50, top 25 and top 20 of the overall team rankings and have the fewest total commitments, five-star commitments, three-star commitments and lowest average points per team. The good news for Pac-12 fans is that their teams have the lowest average number of commitments. That means their classes will be accumulating more commitments than the rest of the conferences as we head into the season and the stretch run to Signing Day.
