Miami, Louisville, Virginia Tech in play for Hodges

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Larry Hodges might be a tight end. He also might be a wide receiver. He might be a Miami lean. He might have a wide-open recruitment. That’s all to say the questions surrounding his college choice are many. The Tampa-area prospect knows the uncertainty exists. It’s just that he doesn’t much care.

Hodges, a 2019 prospect, is just keeping his head down and taking visits, the most recent of which was to the Hurricanes’ Coral Gables campus.

“I was at the Mark Richt camp last week,” Hodges said on Sunday. “It was the same stuff really. They were just letting me know they like me a lot. They want to get me to every home game. They said to just let them know, and I can come down.”

Miami led for Hodges’ commitment at a time. These days, that seems to be less certain for a couple of different reasons. First, Hodges has received new, wide-ranging interest from a number of other major programs. Secondly, it’s unclear how hard the Hurricanes are pushing for his commitment at the moment

“Man, I don’t have a leader yet,” Hodges said. “I like everyone. I’m open.”

According to Hodges Virginia Tech and Louisville are also heavily involved, as he speaks to coaches from the two schools often. He says he intends to visit Virginia Tech this summer and is already in the process of scheduling a date for such a trip. Next up on his offer list, however, could be an SEC program.

“I’m talking to Mississippi State a lot, but they haven’t offered me yet,” Hodges said. “They are recruiting me as a receiver. A lot of other schools want me as, like, a receiver-tight end hybrid.”

RIVALS REACTION: All things being equal, Hodges seems to favor Miami. That said, there are other factors at work. The ability to play wide receiver in college appeals to Hodges and it’s unclear if the Hurricanes would offer him that. It’s also unclear how Hodges is on Miami’s board these days. Virginia Tech, Louisville and others will certainly have a chance here.
