Miami’s 2020 recruiting class took a hit on Tuesday evening, when Rivals100 athlete Avantae Williams tweeted his decision to back off the verbal commitment he made to Miami in February of last year. His announcement came at roughly 7:30 pm in the form of a short tweet. And, just like that, the longstanding commitment was no more.

Williams was last on Miami’s campus as part of an unofficial visit on April 14, and he has been in contact with a number of other schools including Florida, Oklahoma, USC and Ohio State in recent months.

Williams is an underclassman, so it’s not as though his decision to part ways with the Hurricanes leaves UM behind the eight ball. Still, his decommitment combined with that of five-star wide receiver Leonard Manuel, who backed off his pledge to the Hurricanes last month, certainly packs a punch. Still, Miami’s 2020 class is by no means in shambles. UM still holds commitments from five other Rivals100 prospects, making the group one of the best in America at this juncture.

Williams did not offer extended comment in the wake of the tweet announcing his decision to re-open his recruitment, but there will be no shortage of suitors for the four-star athlete, who has shined playing defensive back on this offseason’s 7v7 circuit.

One of the top prospects in the entire class of 2020, Williams attends powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
