Memphis picks up late 2008 signee

Some things didn't work out quite how Stockbridge, Ga. quarterback Tyler Bass had planned but it looks like the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder will be landing on his feet. The class of 2008 prospect had originally signed with Maryland out of high school but that wasn't to be. Instead, as fall practice rapidly approaches, Bass has signed with the University of Memphis and is already ready to go.
"I'm up here in Memphis right now," Bass said. "I'm just about to cook something. Things didn't work out the way there were supposed to (at Maryland) so I just went somewhere else and hopefully things will work out. Sometimes things just don't work out and you gotta do what you gotta do."

The arrival at Memphis wasn't totally unfamiliar to Bass as he had been in heavy communication with the Tigers and was a top recruit out for the Conference USA power.
"They were one of the schools recruiting me before and I just called them up and they said they had a spot for me," he said. "Once I got my release it was on from there."
Now, Bass is focused on preparing for the fall. According to the Memphis coaching staff, his role as a freshman will be as involved as he is ready for.
"They said it's up to me," he said. "That's what coach thinks, it's how well I learn the play book and get used to everything. College is no joke. I've learned that already in 7-on-7. College is different than high school. First and foremost, I have to get in shape and learn my playbook."
