Memphis DE picking up steam

Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway defensive end Dasmine Cathey has been getting lots of attention from programs throughout the country and a couple of schools, including one from the Southeastern Conference, could be on the verge of a scholarship offer.
"I've been getting text messages from Illinois," the 6-foot-4, 215-pounder said. "My coach (Ridgeway head coach John Cooley) told me that Mississippi State told him that they want to recruit me, so I am hoping to get to their Junior Day next week."

Cathey, who had 17 sacks in 2005, knows that he likely will have to add weight at the college level, but says that size has never hurt him.
"My strength is my quickness," he said. "People say I am little, but that just gets my energy up to go get them even more. When I know I am fixing to get blocked, I use my quickness to make a move on them and just love contact."
Cathey grew up following a couple of schools and has a current basketball favorite.
"I grew up around Tennessee State and Mississippi State," he said. "I'm pulling for (Memphis head coach) John Calipari in basketball. If they can get it done, that would be nice."
The Tigers currently are in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 round.
Cathey attended the Rivals.com Junior Day last Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss.
"I learned I got to look at my courses and my classes," Cathey said. "I liked how (Rivals.com speaker Joe Hornback) demonstrated how you visit the colleges and all that because I haven't really been to one."
