MD lineman is one to watch

Parkton (Md.) Hereford offensive center/defensive tackle Joe Akers is a player to watch for 2005. Akers, who has drawn high praise from all who have seen him play, is drawing interest from around the country. Does he have an early favorite?
"No, I am wide open right now. I am getting a lot of looks from big football programs but I don't have any offers yet. Many of the schools have said that an offer is coming soon though," said the 6-foot-2, 315-pound two-way lineman who runs the 40-yard dash in 5.0 seconds.
What programs is Akers hearing from?
"I am hearing from Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Miami, Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA, Connecticut, Michigan State, Alabama, Tennessee, and Marshall. I am very high on Marshall."
Akers projects as a center guard prospect by many at the collegiate level, but many schools are interested in him as a defensive tackle prospect as well.
"Last season, I had 11 sacks and 120 tackles on defense. Many schools are recruiting me as a jumbo athlete. I don't really have preference at this point. I just love playing the game."
What does Akers look for in a school?
"I want to play for a solid coaching staff. Academics are very important to me and so is staying semi-close to home. I would like to stay within four hours of my home."
Akers will attend the Maryland, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Marshall camps this summer.
