McKeesport DB heading to MAC

McKeesport, Pa., cornerback Marvase Byrd had plenty of options to consider.
He had verbal offers from West Virginia, a written offer from Cincinnati, an offer from Minnesota and a verbal offer from Indiana. However, when he took an unofficial visit this past weekend he found the best offer that suited him.

"I committed to Akron on Saturday," Byrd, a 5-foot-9, 179-pound two-star cornerback, said.
"I had Big Ten offers. I had ACC offers. I had Big East offers, but I didn't want to go to a school and sit on the bench. I know Akron's a very good program that's won a lot of games the past few years, and I know I have a real chance to come in and play my freshman year there.
"It's also a nice school. It's a big school with a big campus and a lot of students. It's a real good looking campus, too."
Byrd, who was one of the better defensive backs at the Piscataway NIKE Camp, said he was recruited by Zip assistant Joe Moorhead, who does a tremendous job for the MAC program in the Pittsburgh area.
"Coach Moorhead is a real good guy," Byrd said.
"But every coach I met up there was really good. It's also not that far from home. They recruited me to play cornerback, and to return kicks and punts. The running back coach said I could play there too, but I like being on the defensive side of the ball."
