McGovern has chance at Cal

Bryce McGovern had a big senior season and now the three-star prospect from Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista has decided to accept a preferred walk-on role at Cal. It's an exciting time for the 5-foot-9, 180-pound wide receiver who's only looking for a chance to earn a scholarship.
"I have the opportunity to earn a scholarship if I prove I am a good, collegiate Division I athlete," McGovern said. "Until then, I'm a student at Cal who's non-scholarship. If I prove myself, I can earn a scholarship.

"It will be motivation. It will get me going to know that if I work hard every day I might be able to help my parents out pay for my own education because they've done so much for me, I'd like to do something for them."
McGovern, a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, finished with 71 receptions for 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns this past season.
He's uncertain whether the Golden Bears will use him on offense or defense and the Northern California standout doesn't seem to care - he's just looking for an opportunity to earn a scholarship.
Princeton, Cornell and Brown were three programs involved with McGovern, who despite finishing with 3,263 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns in his career did not pick up any scholarship offers.
McGovern said Cal coach Jeff Tedford has been in touch in recent weeks about a preferred walk-on situation. After visiting this past weekend, McGovern was convinced it was the right thing to do.
"It's so close to home and it's a great education and great football," McGovern said.
"Spending time with the guys I was able to see Cal is just a huge family. Some of the football guys just took me under their wing and showed me how great it is to be a Cal Bear."
