Stefan McClure wants to test himself against the best and that's one of the big reasons why he's so excited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
He was presented with his Army game jersey on Friday, one step closer to getting to San Antonio to see where he stands on the national stage.
"It's going to be a pretty fun time to go down there for the week and meet some new guys, some guys that might be people I play against in college or even go to the same school with," McClure said.
"That will be pretty cool and it's just an honor to be selected to participate in it and to be one of the guys to go."
Rivals.com rates McClure, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound four-star prospect, No. 5 at cornerback, No. 106 nationally and No. 17 in the California state rankings. Those are lofty ratings so McClure, from Vista, Calif., is anticipating a big week of practice against some of the nation's best receivers.
"That's going to be the big thing, competing against those guys," McClure said. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to go against some top receivers. There isn't going to be anyone easy to cover out there.
"Everyone is going to be a top guy, one of the best guys from their league, their school, some of them the best in their state. There will be tons of competition out there and it will be a good measuring stick preparing for college because all those guys will be going somewhere."
What McClure is also looking forward to is experimenting some on offense - if the West coaching staff will allow it. McClure is a two-way star at Vista, where some of his best highlights come at wide receiver, so if it's possible to pull double duty then McClure is all for it.
"I'm thinking I'm going to experiment with offense," McClure said. "I'm going to do mainly defensive back but then try to get in there on some offensive stuff and do some offensive things if they let me and if that works out."
As for recruiting, McClure is still uncommitted and taking an official visit to Oregon State this weekend. The Beavers aren't considered one of his favorites but they could make up ground with a good trip
"I'm just going out there to see if it's somewhere where I like the school and the environment," McClure said.
"I want to see how the coaches coach the players and if it's somewhere where they get the best out of their players and I want to see the energy they have. I want to see what kind of (academic) programs they have for the students, too."
McClure took an unofficial visit to Cal last weekend and apparently loved it. After the trip, the four-star recruit said the Golden Bears have moved up on his list.
He has already taken an official visit to Washington and has to go to Oregon and UCLA before making his decision. The prevailing thought is that the Bruins and Huskies are his two favorite teams at this point in his recruitment.
McClure might not be prepared to make a decision at the Army game since his UCLA visit is scheduled for after the all-star event. He does plan, though, to make a commitment before National Signing Day in February.
