McCabe Commits

Wexford (Pa.) Pine-Richland quarterback Kevin McCabe, like most big-time high school recruits, wanted to announce his decision with some element of suspense. Apparently that is all out the window.
"It's crazy," said the 6-foot-4, 205-pound signal-caller. "I actually committed on Saturday and I'm going to announce tonight on Fox Sports, but it seems like everyone already knows. I committed to Virginia."

McCabe, who is one of the most accurate and polished quarterbacks in the country, hadn't official told anyone in the press until now, but the commitment was leaked in the Roanoke Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette and other places.
"Not sure how they found out, but it's all cool," he said. "I'm happy with my decision and feel very comfortable with Virginia. From the start they made it clear that they wanted me the most. I also love the way the coaches relate to their players, they have a bunch of top players coming in this year and it's the kind of coaching staff that you want to play for. They'll also be around the program for a long, long time."
McCabe chose Virginia over Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU, Georgia Tech and others. Once he made his decision, his coach got an interesting call on Saturday night.
"It was Notre Dame," he said. "When I called them back, they told me how much they wanted me to be the guy in their west coast offense and that they were offering me right then and there. I thought about it and was like, 'I can't go back on my commitment to Virginia now can I?' I lost focus for a second there, but then I realized what I was thinking. Virginia was always my top choice and there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to go there. I guess when you hear Notre Dame sometimes you lose it. They told me that they weren't really offering a lot of quarterbacks early, but they wanted me to be their guy."
So is McCabe solid with his choice?
"Very solid, no doubt," he said. "I love it down there and really got along well with everyone. I also got to meet guys like Mike Johnson and some others last summer at camp and hit it off with them. I think I'm going to be around for the start of something great and something that hopefully ends with a national championship."
McCabe said that the Virginia coaches were pretty happy with his decision.
"Near tears," he joked. "Seriously, they were really excited. I spoke to coach Rocco and coach Musgrave and they were both really thrilled."
