"I'm really open to anything; I try to work as hard as possible and I don't pay attention to all the hype as long as I'm achieving my goals the rest will follow," he said. "I'm impressed with any school that shows interest. I'm not used to the whole recruiting process, but I like any school whether it's Division I, Division I-AA or Division II."
Mayfield stopped by Maryland, Akron and Penn State at the end of May for combines and visits. What did he think of the three schools after the visits?
"Maryland is a great school and I'm very interested in what they have to offer because many of my fellow peers go there including Melvin Alaeze," he said. "Randallstown is known for producing Maryland players, but I treat Maryland like every other school. I'm not afraid of traveling or going out of state.
"Akron wasn't the biggest of schools, but it has an interesting setting. Nothing really surprised me there, but I'm interested in them and we'll see where it goes. They really started showing interest after my combine there. Finally, Penn State is a great school. Larry Johnson is a great guy and very friendly. They are showing a lot of interest in me and their coaching staff is just beautiful."
Mayfield's summer is not over; the lineman is looking at taking at least three more visits to Syracuse, Boston College and another one to Maryland.
"I'm looking to visit those schools sometime in July during the middle of summer," he said. "I might add some more visits, but I'm trying to go on as many as possible before the season."
Mayfield has seen steady interest recently from schools including Virginia, Virginia Tech, Illinois, Nebraska, Michigan State, Marshall and Syracuse among others.
Although it's certain that Mayfield will play on the offensive line, the question still remains if he'll be a guard or tackle?
"Primarily schools are looking at me as an offensive tackle, but a lot of colleges are also looking at me as an offensive guard," he said. "They are looking at me as guard because of my quickness and ability to move. I'm really versatile and I like showing college coaches that I can play multiple positions."
Mayfield just finished up his junior year where he again made the honor roll. This summer he plans to focus strictly on football.
"My summer is all about football," he said. "You can always improve your game in some way; personally I can improve on my physical ability. I think it's great, but it can be improved upon. I also want to contribute to my team even more and help our team get to the championship."
Mayfield was named all-division last season.
