Maryland DB impresses Hokies

Springdale (Md.) Flowers defensive back Evan McCollough is still waiting to receive his first scholarship offer, but an impressive showing at Virginia Tech’s one-day camp last month has caught the eye of at least one Division I program.
McCollough, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound cornerback prospect has gone relatively un-recruited up to this point. A high school quarterback whose future lies on the defensive side of the football, very few schools have had a chance to see Evan workout at all on the defensive side of the football.

“Since the camp ended, things have really picked up in regards to recruiting,” admitted McCollough. “Coach Tony Ball for Tech has kept in pretty constant contact with me. James Madison and Hofstra have also been giving me a lot of looks.”
McCollough’s 4.43 speed in the forty he registered in Blacksburg has raised some eyebrows as far as his potential as a defender. According to Evan, Tech’s coaching staff was pleasantly surprised by his ability to cover receivers in the open field. I guess you could say that cornerback runs strong in his bloodlines. Evan is a cousin of current Maryland prospect and fellow cornerback Jamari McCollough of Randallstown.
“Jamari and I attended the camp together and would like to play for the same program if the opportunity arises,” explained Evan. “Hopefully a program like Virginia Tech comes through with an offer so we get that chance.”
Evan cited his knowledge of playing the quarterback position has really helped him in playing cornerback.
“By playing that position in high school, I know tendencies and can get a good read of what’s happening on the field,” said Evan. “I feel I’m a pretty strong tackler as well, but I want to keep getting better and become a vicious hitter for receivers to look out for across the middle.”
There has been some talk of Evan transferring to Randallstown this summer to play his senior season alongside Jamari, but the window allowing that prospect as a possibility is closing fast.
“We have talked about it, it’s only about thirty minutes from home and I could stay with my cousin,” explained McCollough. “But with practice starting soon and the season right around the corner, it seems like less and less of a possibility, although we haven’t ruled it out just yet.
