One of Maryland's biggest weaknesses over the past few years has been the defensive line. The commitment of Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Rivals250 defensive tackle Austin Fontaine should really help in that area.

IN HIS OWN WORDS…

"I chose the Terps because I felt it was the right fit for me," Fontaine said. "The football is good and I trust coach Brumbaugh. He's a good coach. It's a good environment for me. I want to major in business and they have a great program there.

"I met coach Brumbaugh before he came to Maryland and started talking to him," he said. "I've looked at who he's coached before and how he coached at his old schools. I like how he coaches.

"I haven't really looked at the depth chart or how I could play quickly," said Fontaine. "That wasn't a deciding factor for me so I wasn't too worried about that.

"The fact that a lot of DeMatha guys are at Maryland now wasn't a huge factor but having guys like Marcus and Anthony that have already committed but haven't gotten there yet was kind of a factor," he said. "They are at school with me and talk to me about Maryland all the time. It wasn't that big of a factor."

On committing to Maryland with his current teammate Evan Gregory: "Evan and I have played together going back to middle school and the youth league team," Fontaine said. "It's great that we're going to be together in college too."

RIVALS' REACTION

The pipeline up Route 1 from DeMatha to Maryland is flowing big time. The Terps desperately need to get better on the defensive line and Fontaine is one of the best in the country. He is a great run-stuffer and has no issue taking on double-teams. Fontaine has destroyed game plans by getting penetration up the middle and freeing up his teammates to make big plays. The importance of this commitment cannot be understated.
