Marcel Brooks talks favorites among early offers

DALLAS, Tx. -- Marcel Brooks has drawn the attention of a number of top programs this spring and has had a pretty nice run of offers to show for it.

During his performance in the Mike Vick presents V7 Elite Playmakers Showcase at Lancaster High, he made it clear what has college programs already competing for him. A standout defender in pass-coverage and a fast and squirrely pass-rusher, Brooks was clearly one of the camp’s top talents.

After the camp, Brooks went on another run of offers that included: LSU, Oklahoma, Penn State - which he called his ‘dream school’ in his tweet about it - and TCU. That second wave must have prompted an equally large spike of fans and media wondering if a Top 10 will preface a commitment, because he addressed in a tweet how felt last weekend.

“I’m going to make sure that I see everything,” he said. “I don’t want to say I’m going to commit someplace and then decommit. I don’t have any top-ten; everybody is open.”

Before the new cast of offers had been passed along to him, he did say that he had an early connection with three programs that stand to fare well throughout his recruitment. Brooks said that Baylor. Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M have been three teams that have been of high interest with him.

IN HIS WORDS

On Baylor

“That’s been a special place to me since I was a little kid,” he said. “I just love that place, it’s a great place. I love the new coaches. A lot of things are going good, I might get up there for a few camps and things like that.”

On what he enjoys most about the BU campus

“I love the field,” he said. “How it looks out over the river is fancy. I love fancy. And I think I just might fit in their defense.”

On Oklahoma State

“I’m really tight with the (defensive coordinator, Glenn Spencer),” he said. “To be the first outside linebacker that they’ve offered (in the 2019 class) was a really good experience - it was a blessing.

“The coach told me that they like me at my position and that’s where they would play me if I came there for college,” he said. “They love me pass-rushing and being able to cover guys in the slot, and just reading the run.”

On Texas A&M

“I’m most definitely going out there,” he said. “I’m real tight with the head coach, real tight with the (defensive coordinator, John Chavis), so those are really good things right now.”

More on his relationship with Kevin Sumlin

“We talk on the phone, I call him a lot,” he said. “He doesn’t contact me, I call him, facetime him a little bit and just talk about life. We don’t talk a lot about football, just about life.

“He just doesn’t hand out offers,” he said. “He’s a real straight-up person, a real nice guy, and he loves athletes.”

RIVALS REACTION

Just a week ago, those three schools were in prime position to further build an early foundation with Brooks, but he’s already visited Oklahoma, and was on campus at Texas this weekend. Brooks maintained patience when forecasting the future of his recruitment last Sunday. If he sticks to it, no matter who offers, he may not be compelled to want to commit for some time.

“I just want to let things keep coming to me,” he said. “I’m just going to keep training, working and just staying blessed.”
