RaeJuan Marbley has picked up offers from Grambling, Memphis, SMU, and Tulane over the course of the recruiting process and as his senior season nears in Destrehan (La.) he is preparing to make a decision on his college future.
"The recruitment is going pretty well," Marbley said. "I've settled down and thought about some stuff about the recruiting process and colleges that want me and I think I'm close to making a decision on what college I want to go to.
"Right now I'm sitting down and talking with my family because I've narrowed it down to two schools out of the four that offered me. Right now I'm sitting down with my family and weighing my options between the two schools and seeing how they feel about them."
The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker has narrowed his options down to Tulane and SMU, and both present very exciting options.
"One of the guys I play with now his brother goes to SMU, so I have an insight on the coaching and the program and the tradition," Marbley said of the Mustangs. "I know the academic program is real good. It's kind of away from home but not too far. It's a nice distance. It's a nice part of Texas up there in Dallas."
"Their academic program is really known well around Louisiana so for me to go there from a football aspect would be good and the academic aspect would be amazing," Marbley said of the Green Wave. "To graduate with a Tulane degree would be awesome. I've been talking to coach Curtis (Johnson) and the offensive coordinator Mike Neu and a couple of coaches there. It feels like home there. It is home to me. It's right around the corner from me. It's close enough for my family to see my games and if I do go to Tulane they have a new stadium coming up."
SMU is looking at him as an inside linebacker while Tulane is talking more about outside linebacker. Either way it doesn't matter because as Marbley puts "it's still football."
At this point both schools are pretty evenly matched, but Marbley feels like a decision could come soon. How soon?
"Soon, it's coming soon," Marbley said. "Probably within the next week or so."
Even if he does make decision he does plan to take a few college visits, and programs such as Southern Miss, Northwestern State, Connecticut and Florida State have kept in touch.
While everyone waits to see where he will choose, Marbley continues to push one. Recruiting and his college future are on his mind, but football season is approaching and there are big goals at Destrahan in 2013.
"My personal goals are to again lead the team in tackles and sacks," Marbley said. "I think I finished the season with 101 tackles so I want to step that up and I think I finished the season with 11 sacks so I want to raise the bar on that too. My goal is I want to set the school record. Our school record I think is 26 sacks in one season, so I'm trying to push the bar in tackles and sacks. Team-wise I want to make a pretty good run in the playoffs and get to the playoffs again and hopefully get to the dome."
