Many schools are in pursuit of FSU commit Kenyatta Watson

Kenyatta Watson has been ballin' in 2017. The 6-foot-2, 179 long and rangy cornerback out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson has played eight games and not allowed one catch. He does not get thrown on much, but when he does, he has had his receiver covered well.

His recruitment has really taken off over the last nine months Florida State jumped in early on him. On April 8th, he became the second 2019 prospect out of Grayson to commit to the Seminoles.

Defensive lineman Tru Thompson got it started in March, then it was Watson and offensive tackle Wanya Morris on April 8th. Ronald Thompkins also committed, but he backed off that pledge in September.

Jimbo Fisher and his team has struggled this season. They played Alabama tough for most of the game in the season opener, but they lost quarterback Deondre Francois late and that was a big set-back.

Combine that with games being cancelled and moved around due to Hurricane Irma and that has played a part in Florida State being 2-4 this season. That record has not caused any concern with Watson though. He is looking past that when he thinks about his commitment.

"Every team has their ups and downs, so Florida State not having a great season has not affected me at all," said Watson. "They are going through a rough patch right now, but they still have great coaches and great players.

"The school is the same too, so I am still committed to Florida State. I talk to them about two to three times a week, so not a lot has changed for me."

What Watson sees is the opportunity to be next.

Derwin James is the guy now. Jalen Ramsey before him. The list could go on and Watson likes that idea of being elite on the collegiate level.

"They have produced a lot of great defensive backs at Florida State and that has not changed because they have lost a few games this season. They know how to coach guys at my position, they run great formations to feature defensive backs and they play a lot of them, so that is big for me.

"I could see myself in that role and that is a big part of why I committed to them."

Numerous other schools are still recruiting the four-star junior and he is still keeping his eyes and ears open.

Three he is taking a look at are Florida, Georgia and Texas. He has already visited Athens this season, he is heading out to Austin in November and a trip to the Swamp before the end of the season is possible too.

He is going to give other schools a chance.

"Oh yeah, I am going to take visits, explore the different options and all of that," said Watson. "I am committed, but I am still going to look around and make sure of everything. I have to do that."

The news hit a couple of weeks ago that Texas was going to get a visit from Watson. He will be there for the Kansas. Watson has watched some quick practice clips on video and he likes what he sees there.

The Longhorn coaches have his attention too.

"I want to get out to Texas to check them out because I like their coaches. They really have some cool coaches who are young that know how treat and support a student-athlete.

"It will be my first visit there and I just want to see what it is like. I want to see how aggressive they are on the field. I just want to see what it is like."

He knows what it is like at Florida. The Gators have had Watson on campus four times already. His last visit came over the summer.

Like Florida State, Florida has produced top defensive backs in recent years.

"Florida is one of those schools that has had some great defensive backs too. They have sent quite a few guys to the NFL recently and they like guys like me.

"Coach [Corey] Bell (defensive backs) is the coach who recruits me and I like him. When I watch Florida play, I see big defensive backs that play the style I play, so I like that about them."

The home-state school has been coming hard after Watson for a while now. The Bulldogs had a coach at their game last weekend and Watson has what they are looking for on the perimeter.

"Georgia likes my size and the way I move," said Watson. "They have really been coming at me hard this season. I have been talking with coach [Mel] Tucker (defensive coordinator/defensive backs) and I really like him.

"I like the way Georgia's defense is so aggressive and how they've played this season."

Numerous other schools are still targeting Watson, one being Ohio State, and the Buckeyes are on his radar too. He still has his name on the Florida State commitment list, so all schools are still trailing the Seminoles.

The good thing for those schools outside of Tallahassee is, Watson is going to give them all a shot.

"I still feel good about my commitment to Florida State, but I am still going to take other visits and explore other options and make sure of things," said Watson.

"If I start to feel differently about things with Florida State, then I will sit down with my parents, figure things out and take it from there. For now, my commitment with them is the same."
